Besides that, we recognize that daily recovery continues after full-time care. That’s why we offer a couple of different programs. A partial hospitalization program (PHP) delivers more structure. Because it’s an outpatient approach to care, it gives you plenty of freedom. Even so, you might spend some of your time at the facility for the best results. The other option is an intensive outpatient program (IOP). The ideal step-down program empowers you to regain control of your life. It is less intense than the PHP option. Finding Support From Loved Ones During Inpatient vs. Outpatient Rehab An addict must receive support from their loved ones and sponsor when they are trying to get clean. A successful program will educate addicts on surrounding themselves with the right people. Being around other addicts isn’t usually a good idea. Support should include emotional help and encouragement. Cardiovascular Effects of Stimulants Drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine are categorized as stimulants. These drugs tend to have a near-immediate effect on the cardiovascular system. Soon after taking a stimulant, your heart rate increases as your blood vessels and capillaries narrow. This causes your blood pressure to increase as the heart is forced to work harder. This extra stress can cause a cardiovascular emergency like heart failure or stroke. Why Drug Addiction Is a Choice? Science has confirmed that addiction is a chronic brain disease that can happen to anyone. Despite this, there is still popular belief that addiction is the result of weak character or moral failing. We say that addiction should be looked at in the same way that we view other chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension and cancer. If this is true, why are those diseases are not regarded with stigma and shame in the way addiction is? Well, addiction is a bit more complicated. Addiction is a disease that not only affects the physical body, but also crushes the soul. “Feeding the disease” requires a preoccupation with obtaining and consuming substances. This is often accompanied by deceitful and irresponsible behavior, taking a toll on relationships, family commitments and work duties. It is easy to blame the individual for bad behavior – lying, cheating and stealing, as well as angry outbursts – rather than putting the focus on the disease that creates those behaviors. The addicted person is generally not proud of those behaviors. Being shunned by family, friends and society only contributes to greater shame and self-blame. Can Drug Addiction Cause Epilepsy? Whether to drink alcohol or take recreational drugs is a personal choice, but it is worth knowing the possible effects they could have on your epilepsy. Alcohol or recreational drugs can cause epilepsy in some people. Recreational drugs can trigger seizures or increase the frequency of seizures for some people, and can also interact with medication. Taking recreational drugs increases the risk of seizures and of mental and physical health problems, which in turn make seizures more likely. Learning more about your own epilepsy and treatment means you can make informed choices about your lifestyle. Can Drug Addiction Lead to Dementia? The chronic use of certain drugs may also increase the risk of cognitive impairment and perhaps dementia in later life. This paper focuses on the long-term cognitive consequences of using alcohol, benzodiazepines, tobacco and cannabis. The chronic use of benzodiazepines has been associated with increased risk of cognitive impairment but information relating to dementia remains inconclusive. The chronic use of cannabis may impair intellectual abilities but data on this topic remain sparse and difficult to interpret. In conclusion, there is evidence that some drugs contribute to the causal pathway that leads to the development of cognitive impairment but currently available data do not support the introduction of a separate diagnostic category of drug-induced dementia. Health promotion programs designed to decrease "harmful" drug use may decrease the burden of cognitive impairment and perhaps dementia in later life. Can Drug Addiction Be Genetic? According to research, Addiction is due 50 percent to genetic predisposition and 50 percent to poor coping skills. This has been confirmed by numerous studies. One study looked at 861 identical twin pairs and 653 fraternal (non-identical) twin pairs. When one identical twin was addicted to alcohol, the other twin had a high probability of being addicted. But when one non-identical twin was addicted to alcohol, the other twin did not necessarily have an addiction. Based on the differences between the identical and non-identical twins, the study showed 50-60 percent of addiction is due to genetic factors. Those numbers have been confirmed by other studies. The other 50 percent is due to poor coping skills, such as dealing with stress or uncomfortable emotions. The children of addicts are 8 times more likely to develop an addiction. One study looked at 231 people who were diagnosed with drug or alcohol addiction, and compared them to 61 people who did not have an addiction. Then it looked at the first-degree relatives (parents, siblings, or children) of those people. It discovered that if a parent has a drug or alcohol addiction, the child had an 8 times greater chance of developing an addiction.
